Can You Use a Menstrual Cup with an IUD?

For anyone in the reproductive years of their life, contraception is an extremely important consideration. Many choose to opt for an Intra-Uterine Device (IUD) as it can be worn for many years, can help with painful periods, produces less waste and is reversible if you do want to become pregnant.

We are often asked whether it is safe to use a JuJu menstrual cup when you have an IUD such as a Mirena, seeing as both are worn inside the body. The short answer is YES, however there are a few things to consider first.

As your JuJu cup relies on suctioning to the vaginal walls to stay in place and leak-free, there are some concerns that the suction could potentially dislodge an IUD from the uterus. However, experts have said that the chance of this happening is very slim.

If you do use a cup with your IUD, you can reduce the risk of this occurring by making sure you break the seal before attempting to remove your cup. Although, you should be doing this regardless of whether you have an IUD or not!

Another thing to to consider is the IUD strings. This strings may sit inside or outside of your cup when you insert it. By familiarising yourself with how the strings feels, you should be able to avoid pulling on them when removing your cup. If you feel any tugging sensations or discomfort in your pelvic area when removing your cup, check that the IUD strings not in the way, or stop attempting to remove your cup and see your doctor ASAP. You can also ask your doctor to trim the strings so that they don’t get in the way.

As long as you are careful when removing your cup and take things slow, your JuJu cup and IUD should be able to co-exist without any issues. It’s important to note that you should wait at least a few weeks after having your IUD inserted before attempting to use a cup. We recommend having a chat with your doctor to weigh up the pros and cons and familiarise yourself with your anatomy before going ahead.
