How Often Should I Empty my Menstrual Cup?

There is some confusion amongst menstrual cup uses with regards to what the maximum period of time is that a menstrual cup can be worn for and it is understandable as there is some variation between menstrual cup manufacturers and their recommend empty frequencies.

JuJu recommends you empty your cup every 8 hours

Our original maximum wear time was every 12 hours, however, this has been updated in 2017 to 8 hours in response to a recommendation received by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) when applying for two new models (Model 3 and Model 4) to be added to the existing range of JuJu cups registered with the TGA.

An empty frequency of every 8 hours brings the maximum time a menstrual cup should be used for, before emptied and cleaned, in line with the maximum period a tampon should be used. Although it should be noted that most tampon manufacturers recommend that tampons only be worn for 4-6 hours to reduce the risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS).

Whilst the updated empty frequency time from 12 to 8 hours was only a TGA recommendation, we choose to update the time in the interest of protecting our consumers’ health. Many menstrual cup manufacturers only recommend cups be emptied every 12 hours, and many menstrual cup users with a medium or light flow only empty their cups twice a day (every 12 hours) but it is good to be aware of the updated recommendations made by the relevant governing bodies and make your decision based on all the information available to you.

People with a heavier flow may need to empty their cup more frequently than every 8 or 12 hours as the seal of the cup will be compromised if it is overfull which will result in leaking. For more information on How Often to Empty Your Menstrual Cup, take a look at the Put a Cup In It video below.
