Don’t let the idea of stains put you off trying reusable cloth pads - here are some simple ways to prevent cloth pad stains, and remove any that may appear.
All JuJu cloth pads are made from natural cotton with no chemical treatments, meaning they’re soft, breathable and excellent for sensitive skin. It’s important to keep in mind that cotton is a naturally porous fibre, which can discolour with repeated use. This isn’t an indication that they’re ‘dirty’ and they can certainly still be used as normal (think of them like those stained undies you save just for your period days). However, with proper care, it’s possible to keep your pads stain-free for years to come
Preventing Stains on Cloth Pads
The key to preventing stains on your cloth pads is to rinse them as soon as possible after using and to use cold water to start. It’s not always possible to wash them right away, but you should aim to wash them within 24 hours. You should store your pads in a wet bag until the time comes that you’re able to wash them.
Always rinse your pads using cold water first to remove any blood and discharge. You should rinse them under running water until the water runs clear. Soaking your cloth pads overnight or for at least 6 hours in cold water and some natural stain remover also does wonders to prevent staining. You should only soak them after rinsing thoroughly to prevent further staining.
After rinsing and soaking, wash your cloth pads in the washing machine using a mild detergent on a warm (30 degrees) cycle. They can also be washed by hand. Drying them in the sun will also help to lessen stains due to UV exposure.
How to Remove Stains from your Cloth Pads
If you’ve had a mishap and your pads have become stained, don’t worry. They are still clean and safe to use! However, we understand that many people prefer stain-free pads.
You can attempt to remove stubborn stains that remain after washing by first dampening your cloth pad, then rubbing a paste of bicarb soda and water on the stains. Rinse thoroughly and dry in the sun. You can also try to use commercial stain removers, but keep in mind that it’s important to prevent chemical build up in your pads that might irritate your delicate areas. Always rinse thoroughly or do another wash cycle after stain treatments.
Never use bleach or fabric softeners with your JuJu pads, as this will damage the fibres and make them less absorbent.
What signs of wear should I expect from my JuJu cloth pads?
Just like clothing that is worn and washed repeatedly, your cloth pads will fare similarly. After the first wash, the fabric may feel a little less soft and there may be some slight shrinking. Some stains may build up over time and be tricky to remove entirely using the above methods. But remember, even if your JuJu cloth pad is stained, it doesn’t indicate that it’s unclean at all. They’re still perfectly safe to use and will continue saving you money, and saving waste and pollution from disposables! With proper care, your JuJu cloth pads should last you many years.
If your pads develop any kind of staining other than from menstrual blood, such as green or black spots, it’s time for them to be replaced as this can indicate mould growth.
