Why use a menstrual cup?

A Vaginal Cup Knows Your Body Better Than A Tampon

The Juju Menstrual cup line has been crafted with a whole lot of care. We put comfort, health, and functionality first while creating our cups. The cervix menstrual cup can be worn overnight, and usually lasts 2-3 times longer than a pad/tampon (up to 8 hours in fact!). It's great to swim, run, work, exercise, and basically do anything life throws at you with ease.

How do I use a menstrual cup?

Once you’ve got the hang of it, the menstrual cup becomes an easy part of your period life. Here’s a quick guide to help you have the happiest period possible.

Wash Your Hands

Get your hands as clean as possible with soap and water, before touching your period cup.

Folding the menstrual cup

Hold your period cup and fold it in a C (or a U) shape. This is the most common fold (there are more, check our Menstrual Cup Folding section).

Inserting the period cup

With your dominant hand, hold the folded menstrual cup making sure the rim is below your fingers. Now, find a comfortable position (squat, sit, one leg raised on the toilet seat).

Removing the period cup

Remove your menstrual cup by pinching the base of the cup with your index finger and thumb to break the suction seal (don’t just pull at the stem without doing this first).

Emptying the period cup

Empty the contents into the toilet. Wash the menstrual cup in the sink with soap and warm water and mild soap, then rinse it thoroughly.

Sanitizing your period cup

You can use a Menstrual Cup Sterilizer that has easy instructions. Or you sanitise your cup in between period cycles (and definitely before using it the first time), by putting in a pot of boiling water for 3 to 4 minutes.

The Best Menstrual Cup Folds

C fold

Pinch the sides of the menstrual cup to flatten it, then fold it in half to form the shape of a ‘C’ or a ‘U’. This is the most common menstrual cup fold and recommended for beginners as it opens more gently than the ‘punch down’ fold.

Punch down

People who have difficulty getting their menstrual cup to open often find this fold works well for them as it springs open once inserted. Hold your vaginal cup in one hand then use the index finger on your other hand.

S fold

Pinch the sides of the vaginal cup together to close or flatten it, then take the two sides of the cup (while still closed) and push them in opposite directions to create an ‘S’ shape when looking at the period cup from the top.

Will this hurt?

Inserting the vaginal cup should not hurt. However, for first time users, it can feel uncomfortable to push it at the right angle. If you’ve put the menstrual cup in properly, you should not be able to feel it inside you after two minutes of insertion. It usually takes a couple rounds of practice, the good news is that using a reusable menstrual cup lets you get to know your own body so much better. Most users have a quick learning curve. You’ll be a pro by the time you’re at your third period cycle.

Is it really that easy to insert?

Once you have the hang of the right fold (that works for you) and insertion, it will become second nature. It’s only the first cycle or two that first timers might need to adjust to some practice. Remember, once you feel comfortable with it, you really will be stress-free your entire period cycle!

Once your menstrual cup is clean, store it safely. The best place to store your cup is in a breathable storage bag. You can find these bags anywhere from online to any nearby drugstore. It’s suggested to not store your cup in an airtight container, such as a plastic bag, because this can cause the cup to deteriorate.

A menstrual cup sterilizer is a device that helps to clean and disinfect your menstrual cup. It usually comes in the form of a small, handheld tool that uses ultraviolet (UV) light to kill any residual bacteria and other microbes. JuJu always suggests women to use these devices in order to keep their menstrual cups hygienic and free of any infections!

How to use it?

Fill the container with water, place the menstrual cup inside, and disinfect for roughly 8 minutes. NOTE: Be sure to let the cup cool before removing it from the container.

How is a menstrual cup sterilizer different from cleaning?

Cleaning your menstrual cup only removes the blood and debris from the menstrual cup but does not necessarily kill all bacteria and microbes. Sterilizing it will not only kill any bacteria present in your cup but will also make it really safe for a longer run.
